I had no idea the Kolache Factory in Tustin existed until I searched for breakfast in my area. If you don’t know what a kolache is then you are not alone. A kolache is a pastry stuffed with all types of ingredients including cheese, meats, and sweets.
Went a little overboard and ordered five different kolaches : sausage, cream cheese, jalapeno and cheddar cheese, ranchero, and potato, egg, and cheese.
Being the cheapest, the sausage ($1.09) was small, sort of like a pig in a blanket. Decent taste but not filling. The cream cheese ($1.39) was a mess of cream cheese and sweet too. Seemed more like a doughnut to me. Jalapeno and cheddar ($1.59) was quite spicy and salty with a large amount of pickled jalapenos. Quite a way to get heartburn.
Potato, egg, and cheese ($2.69) and ranchero ($2.69) are larger, and more expensive. The potato, egg, and cheese is just that. If you like those ingredients, then you will enjoy this kolache. The potato makes it quite filling. The ranchero is filled with ham, egg, cheese, jalapeno, and salsa. If you are hungry and want a little bit of everything, then this is the one to get. Seemed like this kolache had the most amount of egg.
Don’t forget to ask if you can have your kolaches warmed up.
The workers here seemed upbeat and anxious to help. Since it opened recently, I hope the level of service keeps up.
Order at the counter and take a seat at the small counter or one of the outside tables. Kolache Factory is a quick place to go to grab a bite and go on. You can also buy by the dozen so if you are sick of doughnuts and need a change then a dozen kolaches could be right up your alley.
